Where does the word wakame come from?

The word wakame comes from Japanese. In South Korea, it is called miyeok. The Latin name is undaria pinnatifida.

What type of seaweed is wakame?

Wakame seaweed belongs to the category of brown algae.

Where does wakame grow?

Originally only found in Japan and East Asia, Wakame now grows in the cold waters off the Atlantic coast of Galicia, among other places.
Its thick root is called mekabu - it is much harder and is not removed in cultivated algae so that the algae can grow back.
The Japanese brown algae Arame and Hijiki do not yet grow in Europe.
